Steaua is by far the most important team in Romanian football history, established in 1947 as the Military Sports Club.

Since then Steaua won the Cup of Romania 20 times. In 1986 Steaua won the European Championship, and was the finalist of the Intercontinental Cup, won the European SuperCup in 1987, and in 1989 was a finalist in European Championship. Steaua plays in the Champions League.

Steaua is owned by the FC Steaua, SA. One shareholder and the actual owner is George Becali.

Becali was involved in a scandal involving an attempt to influence the outcome of a game. He is also under investigation for corruption and in September was suspended for five months by the Romanian Football Federation due to the Suitcase scandal.

Gheorghe Mustata, former leader of Steaua fans is imprisoned in 2006 for organized crime offences.

Leo Strizu, who was the sport director of Steaua, was convicted in 2007 for corruption involving bribing an Army general in a scheme to supply fuel to the Army.
