Switzerland’s parliament decided Monday tolaunch a probe into its banking secrecy law, after the country came under international criticism for having criminalized the disclosure of information concerning the country’s banking sector.

When a journalist asked the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s office in January if any investigations had been launched after an insider revealed that Credit Suisse was servicing some of the world’s shadiest characters, the office first reached out to the bank for advice on how to frame its answer.

In the wake of theSuisse Secrets investigation released last year, which uncovered how the bank Credit Suisse had stored the ill-gotten gains of criminals and the corrupt across the world, prosecutors have now launched an investigation, but not into the bank.

The Swiss government set forth a motion Monday to amend the Banking Act, which currently prevents the press from investigating and reporting on matters related to the finance sector, following revelations that criminals and the corrupt can launder their ill-gotten gains through the country’s banks with minimal fear of exposure.
