At least 27 people, including a police officer, died in a shootout in northern Rio de Janeiro after security forces entered a favela known to be the headquarters of one of Brazil’s largest criminal groups.

Brazilian prosecutors again targeted the family of the country’s PresidentJair Bolsonaro, charging on Monday his son Flávio with embezzlement, money laundering and heading a criminal organization, localO Globo newspaper reported.

As part of a COVID-19-related corruption probe, the federal police raided the residence on Tuesday of the governor of Rio de Janeiro, who has been a vocal critic of the way Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been handling the coronavirus crisis. 

In the hopes of better protecting its judges’ identities, Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro State Court has initiated the creation of special “faceless” courts to prosecute cases of corruption and organized crime, local media reported Sunday.
