Land registry documents show that an Azeri lawmaker purchased two luxury London homes for 26.5 million pounds (US$34.5 million) — even as U.K. authorities were investigating whether some of the money he had transferred to his family’s local bank accounts was linked to money laundering.

The U.K. authorities have seized from an Azerbaijani lawmaker 5.6 million pounds (US$7.56 million) derived from a sophisticated international money laundering scheme that was revealed by the OCCRP and its partners in 2017, the National Crime Agency (NCA) said in a statement on Monday.

The United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA) is looking to seize 15 million pounds (US$20.5 million) in bank accounts that belong to the wife, son, and nephew of Javanshir Feyziyev, an influential Azerbaijani politician. The agency believes the money had been laundered through a vast money transfer system uncovered in 2017 by OCCRP.
