The European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Zagreb ordered raids in the capital and the northern city of Varaždin as part of a corruption probe into the procurement of medical equipment.

Croatia’s anti-corruption police unit carried out the searches targeting several individuals suspected of defrauding the European Union’s financial interests.

Croatian media reported on Thursday that investigators targeted the main hospital in Varaždin and a hospital for medical rehabilitation Varaždinske Toplice.

Investigators said the case involves alleged bribery and misuse of EU funds in public health tenders. The EPPO said evidence is being collected to determine the scope of the scheme and possible links between suppliers and public officials.
