The European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on two members of Russia’s judiciary for “contributing to the repression of civil society and the silencing of dissent,” as well as for undermining democracy and the rule of law in Russia.

The measures ban Moscow City Court Judge Dmitry Gordeev and state prosecutor Lyudmila Balandina from entering or transiting EU territory, freeze their assets and restrict their financial dealings with EU citizens and companies.

Since March 2024, the EU has been sanctioning individuals and entities responsible for human rights abuses, repression of civil society and democratic opposition. Gordeev is accused of repeatedly issuing politically motivated rulings against opposition figures and human rights defenders. Balandina is alleged to have pursued politically motivated charges in line with Kremlin propaganda.
