Former President Martín Vizcarra has been transferred to prison Wednesday after an investigative court ordered five months of pretrial detention over bribery allegations, the judiciary said on X. The 62-year-old is accused of accepting bribes from construction companies in exchange for hospital contracts while governor of the Moquegua region 11 years ago, according to state news agency Andina.

Vizcarra became the fourth former president currently held at Barbadillo Prison in Lima, and the fifth to have been detained there overall. He served as Peru’s president from March 2018 until his impeachment in November 2020. The ruling follows the April sentencing of ex-president Ollanta Humala to 15 years for money laundering.
