A special court in Bangladesh on Thursday indicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on charges of crimes against humanity stemming from a deadly 2024 crackdown on protesters.
Hasina, who has lived in self-exile in India since being ousted from office in August 2024, was charged alongside former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and ex-police chief Chowdhury Mamun. Only Mamun has pleaded guilty, according to local media.
Prosecutors allege Hasina ordered a nationwide police crackdown that killed at least 1,500 people and injured more than 25,000. Arrest warrants were issued in June after the court accepted the charges.
Hasina was sentenced in absentia last year to six months in jail in a separate contempt case. Her trial is set to begin August 3.
