The MacArthur Foundation announced yesterday that its 100&Change award was awarded to the Broad Institute for its Sentinel project, a joint effort co-led by Pardis Sabeti of the Broad Institute and Christian Happi of the Institute of Genomics and Global Health, Redeemer’s University, Nigeria. Sentinel is an outbreak surveillance framework that helps prevent pandemics through empowering local communities.

Selected from a pool of 869 applicants, OCCRP was one of five finalists for the $100 million global award competition to fund a proposal that would help solve a critical world issue.

“We congratulate Sentinel, a wonderful project that meets a critical need,” said OCCRP Co-Founder Drew Sullivan. “OCCRP is immensely proud to have been named a finalist, and we will continue to ramp up our mission to unmask the forces of crime and corruption in these trying times.”

Over the past several months, the finalists worked with an expert team to strengthen their proposals, present a preliminary plan, and engage with communities of interest.

“We are incredibly grateful to the MacArthur Foundation for this opportunity and for their valuable advising and support during this process,” said OCCRP Co-Founder Paul Radu. “With their help, we have a better blueprint and are even more well-positioned to scale-up our model of empowering investigative journalists to serve the public.”

As a benefit of being a finalist, OCCRP has joined Lever for Change’s Bold Solutions Network, a curated network of vetted organizations that have the potential to expand their impact by securing additional funding.
