The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has referred Thursday to the Hellenic Parliament evidence implicating two former Ministers of Rural Development and Food in a suspected fraud involving EU agricultural funds.

The referral stems from an ongoing EPPO investigation into OPEKEPE, Greece’s agency for EU farm subsidies. Officials are suspected of enabling false claims through fabricated land leases and livestock declarations between 2019 and 2022.

Evidence suggests the former ministers may have aided the scheme while in office. However, under Greek constitutional law, only Parliament can investigate or prosecute government members, forcing EPPO to split its case.
