Kelmendi was arrested on Saturday, September 22nd by Kosovo police on an international warrant filed in 2010 in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) but was released after 48 hours because Kosovo has no extradition agreement with BiH and could not prosecute him locally for the crime.
But minutes after he was released by the Kosovo police, reports say, Kelmendi was re-arrested by EULEX, the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, which has the capacity to try him in Kosovo for crimes committed outside of the country.
Kelmendi and his father Naser Kelmendi have long been sought by the international law enforcement community, both being featured on Interpol’s list of wanted criminals. Earlier this year, Naser Kelmendi became the first suspected European drug trafficker to be added to the United States’ “black list” of foreign criminals eligible to face sanctions under the US Kingpin Act, and in September became the subject of an international arrest warrant.
