The violence was the latest surge in anti-government protests that began earlier this year, sparked by plans to develop an upscale resort on a protected section of coastline. Taking its name from the flocks of pink-tinted water fowl that nest in the area, the movement has been dubbed the “Flamingo Revolution.”
