Location: Remote position requiring travel to OCCRP’s HQ in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Applicants must work within time zones UTC +0 to UTC +4.
Application Deadline: February 26, 2021.
The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is a growing, global nonprofit media organization that is reinventing investigative journalism for the public good. By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, we expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. We see a future where organized crime and corruption are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened. Our global team includes editors, researchers, data engineers, security specialists, administrators, technologists, and strategists, each with areas of in-depth expertise.
OCCRP is looking for a senior full-stack software engineer and product lead for the Aleph platform. Aleph is OCCRP’s data platform, which combines a powerful search engine, data forensics tool and collaborative workspace for investigators. The data processed by Aleph includes sources as diverse as unstructured, leaked email dumps and large, structured datasets like company registries or real estate registries. We scrape more than 250 data sources on a routine basis to help our global network to follow the money. Aleph combines all this data into an investigative knowledge graph that can be analyzed and extended by our reporters.
The Aleph open source toolchain that drives this architecture was developed by OCCRP’s data team, and is actively used by our reporters, and deployed by several other media and anti-corruption organizations. You will be responsible for the development, maintenance and security of Aleph, it’s strategic direction, and for managing one of the world’s largest investigative journalism data archives. You will coordinate a small team of in-house developers (Python, Postgres, React) under the guidance of CTO. You will work closely with our network of journalists to understand their needs and continuously improve the tooling. You will also work alongside technologists at other media organizations that have deployed Aleph to ensure the platform is an open resource to investigators across our industry. This is an exciting role for those interested in civic technology, public interest journalism and large amounts of data.
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to take the lead on the following:
