Location: This position is based initially in OCCRP’s main office in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina but will move to OCCRP’s European headquarters when that is established. However, due to the current global situation there is an option for remote work until the end of the pandemic.

The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) is seeking a Chief Financial Officer to oversee all aspects of the organization’s financial operations. OCCRP is a growing, global nonprofit media organization that is reinventing investigative journalism for the public good. By developing and equipping a global network of investigative journalists and publishing their stories, we expose crime and corruption so the public can hold power to account. We see a future where organized crime and corruption are drastically reduced and democracy is strengthened. Our global team includes editors, researchers, data engineers, security specialists, administrators, technologists, strategists, corruption experts, and connectors each with areas of in-depth expertise.

Position overview

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will be responsible for planning, directing, and controlling all accounting and financial functions of the organization. They will serve as OCCRP’s primary spokesperson for all fiscal matters and will be responsible for the management and administration of all aspects of the daily operations of the organization’s finance department. The CFO will be responsible for preparing and overseeing OCCRP budgets and budget projections, preparing and presenting financial statements and development of fiscal operations.

The CFO will be accountable for short and long-range financial and capital plans and for evaluating OCCRP’s financial condition in support of the organization’s strategic and operational objectives. They will be responsible for managing debt and financing options and will be present and active in Board meetings. Working collaboratively with the Assistant Publisher, the CFO will provide advice and executive oversight, as needed, to ensure that the areas of operations, development, technology, and HR are operating at maximum thoroughness and efficiency, and in concert with the strategic and operational needs and directives of the ED and the organization by extension.

The CFO will report directly to the Assistant Publisher and will be a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT).

The successful candidate will be an outstanding leader and contemporary thinker who possesses substantive knowledge of non-profit administrative business management, accounting principles and organizational skills. The individual will reinforce a culture of measurement, accountability and service and will actively lead and participate in influencing organizational direction, growth, strategic planning, and financial forecasting as a member of the SMT. Under direction from the Assistant Publisher, they will also work closely with the Board of Directors and advise the Board and SMT on all strategic and tactical matters relating to financial strategy and status, risk management and compliance, short-term and long-term planning.
