French authorities are investigating a series of major cyberattacks after a hack of the Ministry of Public Action and Accounts compromised the personal and financial data of nearly 700,000 individuals and businesses. The stolen records—which include taxable income, family quotient data, withholding tax rates, land registry records, and probate files—came to light after being put up for sale on a hacking forum.
The French National Police’s anticybercrime unit is leading the investigation into the breach. The incident follows a separate late-July cyberattack targeting the Ministry of National Education, with media reports indicating that the same hacker claimed responsibility for selling data extracted from both government systems.
Additionally, ministry officials disclosed that hackers compromised Bloctel, an official government service that allowed users to block telemarketing calls before shutting down on August 11. That breach exposed files containing 3 million phone numbers.
