Malaysian police dismantled a drug syndicate and seized $6.79 million worth of MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, following a raid on a makeshift laboratory that left the group’s alleged ringleader dead.

Officers recovered more than 180 kilograms of MDMA from a house converted into a processing lab for domestic and international distribution, according to state news agency Bernama.

During the operation, police shot and killed the 52-year-old suspect after he opened fire on the raiding team, said Hussein Omar Khan, director of the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

Hussein added that the syndicate routinely operated out of secluded residential areas to mask its drug processing and distribution network from law enforcement.
