The Committee to Protect Journalists said Sunday that it is “deeply concerned” by reports that South African investigative journalist Micah Reddy and local fixer Kooki Mahmoud have gone missing in Djibouti, and urged authorities “to immediately clarify their whereabouts and ensure their safety.”
Contact with Reddy, the African coordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), and Mahmoud, a Djibouti-based journalist, was lost Saturday at approximately 1 p.m. local time, said an ICIJ statement. The statement, issued Sunday, said ICIJ is gravely concerned for their safety and authorities in Djibouti have not so far responded to its requests for information.
“We are calling on the government of Djibouti to: Immediately clarify Reddy and Mahmoud's whereabouts and confirm their well-being; Launch a prompt, transparent investigation into their disappearance; Keep their families, colleagues and employers fully and promptly informed,” the ICIJ statement said.
