John Reed joined OCCRP in 2020 and is associate publisher. He has run successful startup digital publications and been a staff writer and editor at some of the most well-known outlets in political journalism. He has nearly 15 years’ experience developing large audiences around issues in politics, law, tech, human rights, and national security, John’s specialty is building digital media outlets that take complex topics and make them accessible to both experts and the general public.
In 2018 and 2019, he was a freelancer and contributing editor at Slate, where he helped organize its coverage of the Mueller investigation. From 2014 to 2018, he was managing editor of Just Security and a research fellow at NYU School of Law’s Center for Human Rights and Global Justice. John helped turn Just Security into a publication read by high-level government officials, prominent journalists, NGO staff, academics, and the general public. In 2012, he helped launch Foreign Policy magazine’s digital national security channel, where he was a staff writer covering the intersection of technology and conflict. Prior to Foreign Policy, he was the editor of Military.com’s publication Defense Tech. Between 2007 and 2010, he covered military aviation, cybersecurity, and the defense industry around the world for Defense News and Inside Defense.
Prior to his career in international news, John worked in Silicon Valley, where he helped launch the North American operations of a Scandinavian tech startup. Before that, he was a small-town reporter whose first story as a professional journalist involved chasing escaped emus around Tracy, California.
